Experimental Process, Step 3A - Purification by Water Washing

Glycerin present in the sample was drained out of the separation flask after sitting for 24 hours.  Five other samples were made in this fashion.  Crude biodiesel samples 3A (50 mL), 3B (50 mL),  2B (50 mL), 6A (50 mL), 5A (50 mL), and 5B (42 mL) were subjected to purification by water washing.  Sample 6B was not washed at all and samples 2B and 6A were only washed five times.  Sample 6A was then later subjected to electric field assisted washing.

The samples were transferred to new separation flasks.  An equal ratio of 1:1 mL crude biodiesel to distilled water was used in the washing procedure.  Table 1 describes the washing results of each individual sample.

Table 1 - Results of water washing samples

The washing method for every sample was similar to that of mist washing (http://make-biodiesel.org/Water-Washing/mist-washing-biodiesel.html).  When the waste water drained from a sample became clear, the washing procedure was done.  Water was drained from the samples until the first drops of biodiesel entered the waste beaker.  Even though biodiesel was lost during this process, it was done to ensure that no water remained in the samples.

Sample 5A was discarded because it produces nonsensical data.  Since multiple control samples were developed, sample 5A was not important to the experiment.  Negative values in Table 1 are hypothesized to be the result of water that did not fully separate from the biodiesel during the settling process.
